Our Subversive Voice Zine

Client: UEA Our Subversive Voice

Brief: Create a zine to accompany the public launch of AHRC-funded research project Our Subversive Voice: The History and Politics of the English Protest Song at Norwich Arts Centre in January 2022. To include an academic case study of punk culture and a timeline of 250 historic English protest songs from 1600-present times.

I created a 32-page booklet with a full colour cover and monochromatic inners inspired by DIY zine culture of the 1980s. I incoporporated artwork from Crass’s political anthem How Does it Feel (To Be the Mother of a Thousand Dead) to which the academic case study refers. Using an accessible photocopier and physical cut and paste methods I tapped into qualities of authentic zine culture whilst keeping the production costs low.
