Alternative Listening Notes for Benjamin Britten’s opera Peter Grimes. Produced from conversations with Katy Hamilton as part of an Arts Council funded project BOAT (for Peter), 2017. Layouts by Mark Devereux Projects, print by RAP Spiderweb, Leeds. I created a body of work in response to the opera, which was exhibited at Snape Maltings and APG Works, Sheffield. See a short film by Jenni Shaw documenting the project here: Vimeo

What are the Listening Notes about?

It’s an A5 booklet which features an alternative guide to Benjamin Britten’s 1945 opera ‘Peter Grimes’ including character descriptions and brief synopsis. Then there is a discussion with music academic Dr Katy Hamilton [ Katy's website ] about themes in the opera. We talk about dreams and ideals; plans and material realities; rules, roles and rumours; sea, senses and cycles. Then there are images of the artwork I created for my exhibition BOAT (for Peter) shown at Snape Maltings during the Aldeburgh festival 2017 and at APG Workds, Sheffield. It was printed on 100% recycled stock by RAP Spiderweb, Leeds and supported by Arts Council England.
